Photography

Photography is allowed in most areas of the museum for personal, non-commercial use. Flash photography is not permitted. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Some temporary exhibitions may restrict photography entirely.

Bags & Security

All bags are subject to a security search at the entrance. Large suitcases and oversized luggage are not permitted inside the museum. There is no cloakroom or luggage storage. Backpacks should be worn on the front in busy galleries.

Food & Drink

Eating and drinking are not permitted in the gallery spaces. Refreshments may only be consumed in the museum's cafes and designated picnic areas. Sealed water bottles may be carried but should not be used in galleries.

Behaviour

Do not touch the specimens or display cases unless at designated interactive exhibits. Running is not permitted. Keep noise to a respectful level. There is no dress code. Smoking and e-cigarettes are prohibited throughout the museum and grounds.

Can I take photos of the blue whale skeleton?
Yes, photography is allowed in Hintze Hall and throughout the permanent galleries. You can photograph the blue whale skeleton "Hope" and all other permanent exhibits. Just remember: no flash, no tripods, and no selfie sticks. Photos should be for personal use only.
Can I store luggage at the museum?
No, the Natural History Museum does not have a cloakroom or luggage storage facility. Large suitcases and oversized bags are not permitted inside. If you have luggage, consider using a luggage storage service near South Kensington station before visiting.
Are strollers and prams allowed?
Yes, strollers and prams are welcome throughout the museum. Lifts are available to all floors. Baby changing facilities are located on multiple floors. The museum is very family-friendly and accustomed to welcoming visitors with young children.
Can I bring a water bottle?
You can bring a sealed water bottle into the museum, but you should not drink in the gallery spaces. Use the cafes, rest areas, or the outdoor grounds for refreshments. Water fountains are available in some areas of the museum.
